The brutal shark attack that took Tiffany Johnson's right arm has given her an unshakeable testimony in God. Without his help, she wouldn't be here today, she told WBTV.
While snorkeling in turquoise-blue waters near Nassau, Bahamas, the 32-year-old mother of three from North Carolina was attempting to be as still as possible so as not to disturb the fish around her, reported Tracking Sharks. Her husband, James Johnson, had been feeling seasick earlier and was resting on a nearby boat.
When the shark grabbed hold of Tiffany Johnson, the pain wasn't immediate.
"I felt like a tug or bump on my arm," Tiffany Johnson said in the Tracking Sharks story. "I honestly thought I had bumped into something, that's what it felt like."
"He didn't struggle at first," she continued. "He was just kind of sitting there with my arm in his mouth, almost as if he was waiting for me to do something. It was very strange."
While fighting the shark and eventually breaking free, Tiffany Johnson's right arm was cut off right below her elbow.
Her husband rushed to her aid, jumping in the water in hopes of rescuing his wife, said WBTV. "I was just praying the whole time that the shark wasn't following us'" he said in the article.
He wasn't the only one. While Tiffany Johnson was swimming back to safety, she cried aloud, "Help me, Help me, Jesus," reported Faithwire.
When she finally reached her husband in the water, Tiffany Johnson said she couldn't have done it alone.
"I had this supernatural, God-given strength that just rose up within me," recounted Johnson in the WBTV story. "And I had this determination and thinking this is not the end for me. I'm not going to die here. He's not going to take my life. I'm not going to allow it to."
The gray, medium-sized shark that attacked Johnson was most likely a tiger shark, reported WBTV. Previously, there had been no shark sightings in the area. According to Heavy.com, tiger sharks, hammerheads, blacktips and bull sharks are all native to the Caribbean waters, though not all are considered to be aggressive.
Throughout the ordeal, Tiffany Johnson said her faith in God gave her not only strength but also a presence of mind. "I felt this tangible peace on me and it was so thick, that I was just calm," she said to Heavy.com.
Still, Tiffany Johnson can scarcely believe that she escaped with her life, a fact which she hopes others will recognize as divine intervention.
"I was really scared that the shark was going to follow me. Blood attracts sharks," she told Tracking Sharks. "I knew I had to get out of the water as fast as possible. It did not follow me, by the grace of God, because it doesn't make sense to me. It didn't grab my leg while I was pulling away or anything."
Now, Tiffany Johnson is overwhelmed with gratitude, said Heavy.com. "I'm thankful to be able to share this story and I hope, and I know, that it's going to change people's lives because you can't hear this story and not see God in it.
"I'll have another chance. I'm just so thankful. I'm thankful to be here."
After three surgeries in seven days, Tiffany Johnson will soon be fitted with a prosthetic, reported WBTV.
"Who cares about a limb? It's a limb, and I'm here," Tiffany Johnson told WBTV. "If you really listen to this story you will realize there really is no other explanation but God."
